Preparing a revenue binder auditors will actually open

A binder structure that answers IFRS 15 questions without sending auditors hunting through email threads.

Person signing documents at a wooden desk

Auditors do not need every email your sales team ever sent. They need a clear path from contract to invoice to recognition journal. A well-ordered binder — digital folders work as well as paper — shortens fieldwork and reduces the late-night scramble for “just one more sample.”

Suggested sections

  1. Revenue policy summary (two pages maximum).
  2. Roll-forward of deferred and recognised revenue for the period.
  3. Contract sample with invoices, amendments, and credit notes clipped together.
  4. Explanations for unusual items: multi-year packs, terminated contracts, significant credits.
  5. Evidence of management review on the month-end schedule.

Tone matters

Write explanations as if a knowledgeable outsider will read them. Avoid internal slang and system field names without a key. If a credit corrected a billing error, say so plainly. Ambiguous notes invite more sampling.
